What is the Project: Hack all about?
It was 2016 when I first proposed the idea of a PMO Hackathon (https://www.hotpmo.com/blog/pmo-hackathons). I wondered "Why software developers have all the fun?". If the format worked for software, I thought, then there was no reason why the PMO could not adopt the format and use it elsewhere in the business. The idea turned reality in 2017 when we joined forces with PMOFlashmob and Ticketmaster to run the worlds first PMO Hackathon. You can read more about it on the PMOFlashmob site here https://pmoflashmob.org/using-free-tools-for-multi-project-management-pmo-hackathon/ or at Ticketmaster’s site here: https://getstarted.ticketmaster.co.uk/news/we-had-fantastic-time-pmoflashmob.
Martin Paver and the team at the London Project Data Analytics meetup group have also taken to the idea of hackathons in the Project Management space. Last year they ran their first Hackathon, and on the weekend of February 23rd, they will be running their second.

Who are the London Project Data Analytics Meetup Group?
Martin Paver, founder of the London Project Data and Analytics meetup is a man with a mission. He has a passionate believe that we can make the world of projects delivery a better place improving the way we leverage data within projects, programs and portfolios. He is striving to overcome some of the practical constraints that prevent the full value of projects data being realized and he is working to shine a light on teams that are using projects data to resolve real-world project challenges. As well as exploring how projects data can be exploited using traditional approaches, his meetups often explore how machine learning and AI can be deployed to resolve challenges - drawing on expertise from big big data experts and PMO experts.
Why should you attend the second Project Data Analytics Hackathon - Project: Hack?
The project data analytics hackathon is an amazing opportunity to work with like-minded people to explore and discover ways that data science can revolutionize the way we deliver projects in the future. Project: Hack aims to:
Explore methods and tools to transform how insights and value can be extracted from project data. Ranging from risk and schedule data through to on site presence of personnel.
Enable delivery professionals to understand the predisposition of projects to specific challenges, to predict them arising and take action to avoid the avoidable.
Ignite the professional imagination on what can be achieved and shape the future of project delivery.
The event will be a great opportunity to explore methods and tools to gain insights from project data. Multiple datasets will be available on the day from risk and schedule data to weather data (an important consideration on construction projects). You’ll also have the opportunity to influence some major players such as Highways England, Sir Robert McAlpine and the team from the UK's largest road construction project. As well as having access to the datasets, all attendees will have Microsoft Azure passes for the weekend allowing them to tap into the power of the cloud for advanced analysis and deeper learning.
There will be on-ground support. Data scientists, PowerBI experts and subject matter experts will help you with technical queries and mentors will guide you towards the perfect pitch.
How will the Hackathon work?
The day will kick off on Saturday with an introduction to the challenges and to the datasets. If you have an idea, you’ll have the opportunity to pitch it to the crowd and invite team members. Bring your own ideas and form a team, or join someone with an interesting idea you’d like to explore further.
From there you’ll spend the weekend developing concepts, interrogating data, building proof of concepts and pulling together a pitch to present. At the end of the hackathon, you’ll get to present your idea to industry experts who will judge proposals and award prizes.
It promises to be a great couple of days will be had with food, drinks, ideas and bucket loads of fun. The only requirement is to come with a lot of bright ideas and enthusiasm!
